Creating a Sanctuary: An Update on Our City of Perth LGBTQI+ Safe Space Application
At the heart of every thriving community is a fundamental human need: the right to feel completely secure, valued, and celebrated for exactly who you are. This project has been in the works for over a year, and we have spent that time working hard on a dedicated mission to establish a permanent, recognized LGBTQI+ safe space right here in the heart of Perth.
Today, we want to share a massive milestone with you, explain exactly what this project means for our community, and extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who has stood by us.
What is the LGBTQI+ Safe Space Project?
This initiative is more than just a physical location. It represents a long-term commitment to visibility, wellness, and targeted LGBTQIA+ support. Our goal is to establish a dedicated, accessible environment where individuals across the spectrum of sexuality and gender identity can find refuge, community connection, and resources free from judgment or discrimination.
While Western Australia has made incredible strides with initiatives like the LGBTIQA+ Inclusion Strategy 2025–2035, grassroots, brick-and-mortar safe zones remain essential. This space will serve as a hub for:
-
Peer Connection & Community Building: A welcoming environment to meet, share experiences, and combat social isolation.
-
Resource Access: Direct pathways to health, wellness, and inclusive safety services.
-
Sexual Exploration & Education: A sex-positive, supportive environment that fosters healthy sexual exploration, identity empowerment, and open communication about relationships and intimacy.
-
A Visible Sanctuary: A clear, undeniable signal that the Perth queer community belongs in the cultural fabric of our city center.
Next Stop: City of Perth Council Determination
We are incredibly thrilled to announce that after more than 12 months of rigorous paperwork, compliance checks, and community advocacy, our formal application is moving to its most critical stage. We are officially hoping that our proposal will go before the City of Perth council for formal determination this month (June 2026).
Securing local council backing is the final piece of the puzzle. It validates our collective effort to build a more inclusive, diverse, and vibrant city. We are staying closely engaged with council members and stakeholders to ensure the urgent need for local social inclusion and safety remains front and center on the civic agenda.
A Heartfelt Thank You to Our Community
We didn't get to this point alone. To everyone who signed our petition, shared our posts, voiced their experiences, or sent words of encouragement, we want to say a massive thank you. Your overwhelming support has been the driving force behind this campaign.
When we first launched this advocacy effort over a year ago, we knew the community needed a dedicated space, but the sheer volume of passion and solidarity we’ve witnessed has been profoundly moving. You proved that when it comes to standing up for equity and safety, our community speaks with one undeniable voice.
What Comes Next?
As we wait for the council’s agenda to be finalized over the coming weeks, we ask that you keep the momentum going. Keep talking about the importance of safe spaces in Perth, look out for one another, and stay tuned to our channels. We will share the exact dates and outcomes of the council determination meeting the moment they are locked in.
Together, we are making our city a place where everyone can live proudly, safely, and authentically.

Hi everyone,
Following the City of Perth Council’s decision, we have officially lodged our formal application for review with the State Administrative Tribunal (SAT).
This marks the official start of the appeal process. While navigating tribunal reviews takes time and dedication, taking this step ensures our proposal receives an independent, comprehensive hearing. We remain 100% committed to advocating for this sanctuary and seeing this through to the very end.
Thank you to everyone who continues to reach out, share words of encouragement, and stand alongside us. Your belief in this space is what keeps this momentum alive.
We will keep you informed as hearing dates and next steps are scheduled.
With love, gratitude, and determination,
Sad to read that this proposal has been rejected despite all the hard work of getting the application in.
Maybe consider setting up in a different location? City of Vincent might be more supportive of this kind of project.
Hi everyone,
We are writing to share some sad and disappointing news following the City of Perth Ordinary Council meeting.
Unfortunately, the Council voted to reject our application for the LGBTQI+ safe space. We are deeply saddened and heartbroken by this outcome, knowing how much this sanctuary is needed and how much love, effort, and community support went into bringing it to this point.
While this decision is a major setback, this is far from the end of our journey. We remain completely dedicated to creating this space for our community, and we will be taking this matter all the way to the State Administrative Tribunal (SAT) to appeal the decision.
We refuse to give up on this vision, and we will continue to advocate and fight for a safe space where everyone in our community feels welcomed, supported, and valued.
Thank you to every single person who has stood by us, sent messages of support, and championed this project alongside us. We will keep you updated as we prepare our next steps for SAT.
With love and determination,
Nick
Hi everyone,
Following the City of Perth Agenda Briefing Session (ABS) on Tuesday, 21 July.
The meeting went ahead as scheduled, and our application for the LGBTQI+ safe space has officially been presented and discussed. The decision is now in the hands of the City of Perth Council members, who will vote on the application at the Ordinary Council meeting next week.
We also want to take a moment to express our immense, heartfelt gratitude to a City of Perth employee who generously took time out of his day to attend the session and deliver a beautiful deputation in favor of our application. His support and meaningful words meant the absolute world to us, and we will forever be grateful for his advocacy.
Thank you to everyone who has followed and supported this journey so far. We will keep you posted as we move toward the final council decision!
Nick
Thanks for keeping at this Nick. It’s been too long since we had a venue of this kind, and irrespective of the outcome of the application, please know that we appreciate your effort and patience.
